Chickens are raised for their eggs and meat by millions of households in Tanzania. But most poultry keeping is informal or low tech, without much specific care to ensuring healthy animals and optimal production. There is, however, clear latent demand for eggs in the domestic market in the general trade segment of the economy and the opportunity to improve access and affordability of nutritious table eggs.

East Coast Agritech (ECA) has developed a poultry production system for rural farmers complete with comprehensive business and operational support, quality control measures and a guaranteed off-take market to enable rural households to manage their own poultry farms and meaningfully complement their monthly income through the sale of eggs. ECA places custom designed houses and chickens of egg-laying age with carefully selected farmers and provides them continuously with key inputs (water, feed, advice) while twice weekly buying the eggs directly from the farmers.
